The SETO board features a four-by-four grid known as the Main Play Area (MPA), where all gameplay takes place. Players move their pieces within the MPA to create scoring patterns and outmaneuver their opponent.

SETO is played by two players, represented by the White and Red playing pieces. Each player has eight playing pieces: four square-shaped pieces and four circle-shaped pieces. Every playing piece bears one of four movement symbols—Triangle, Circle, Square, or X. The symbol determines how the piece moves, while the shape determines the group of pieces used to form scoring patterns.
